What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.
How to use this timer:
- Identify your task: Pick one thing you want to work on.
- Start the timer: Click "Start" to begin a 25-minute work session ("Pomodoro").
- Work until it rings: Focus intensely on your task. Avoid distractions.
- Take a short break: When the alarm rings, take a 5-minute break. Stretch, grab a coffee, or breathe.
- Repeat: After 4 cycles, take a longer break (15-30 minutes).
Why it works
This method trains your brain to focus for short periods and helps you stay on top of deadlines or constantly-refilling inboxes. With time, it can even improve your attention span and concentration.
